Why is it that every time you do a swap you run in to a million snags? I'm currently in the middle of an engine swap. The Jeep is a 1988 YJ with a 258, and the donor engine is out of a 1990 YJ. It's also a 258.

I pulled the original engine and tranny with little trouble. As I was trying to source the proper carb gaskets, both factory for the spacer and one for my Weber, I noticed the exhaust manifold was cracked on the new motor. I pulled the one off my old engine, but the holes weren't lining up. Not by much, but enough to cause a problem. After 3 hours and some clearancing with a grinder, we got the manifold on.

We decided to drop the engine in to the Jeep before we called it a night. Once it was in I realized major problem #2...The difference in the oil pan was enough that the exhaust wouldn't clear, as there's no space between the bellhousing and the lower sump part of the pan. This was where the exhaust crossed over on the original engine.

Now I have to pull the engine BACK out and swap the pans. :Grenade::pp:

Tomorrow is going to be a two pot of coffee day and a six pack of beer, because I'll be at it all day I have a feeling. :flipthebird:

Well, the engine is in and it's mostly back together. All that's left are a few vaccuum lines and some wires. I got the core support/grille and radiator in, along with the transfer case and drivelines.

One more day of working on it and I should be able to try to start it. Fingers crossed!
